A documentary chronicling his rise from relatively obscure professor of psychology to international notoriety, then, risks being controversial in its own right. Indeed, prior to the film's release, this has been the case, as evidenced by attempts (sometimes rising to the level of terrorist threats) to stop the film from being screened in some communities. The film itself, however, manages to be remarkably even-handed in its approach, giving both Dr. Peterson's supporters and detractors the opportunity to speak their minds. One assumes that the viewer of such a documentary is already familiar with Dr. Peterson's work, so while the film touches on some of the highlights of his message, it makes little attempt to fully elucidate his thinking. If you're not already familiar with the professor, you would be well-advised to read his books or watch his lectures in addition to this documentary in order to get a full picture. However, while the documentary offers nothing new in terms of Dr. Peterson's thoughts on philosophy, politics, or psychology, it does provide a fascinating peek behind the curtain at the man himself. Featuring footage of Peterson at home and interviews with his family, friends, and acquaintances, the documentary shows the viewer a side of Dr. Peterson not typically seen in televised news interviews and some insight into the kind of person he is when he's not lecturing to sold-out theatres. If I were to offer a word of criticism, it would be simply that in its attempt to be even-handed, the film glosses over a series of significant episodes in the story of Peterson's rise to fame; specifically, the extreme zealotry of some (admittedly a minority) of his detractors whose protests of a number of his events became uncomfortably violent. It's all well and good to show the viewer interviews with mild-mannered critics of Dr. Peterson's politics (and fair enough; agree or disagree, they have the right to express their opinions) but the viewer unfamiliar with the threats and property damage resulting from protests of some of the Peterson lectures could come away from the documentary without truly grasping the magnitude of the political polarization described throughout the documentary in milder terms. This documentary will probably appeal primarily to Dr. Peterson's supporters. Those people will enjoy this more personal take on his story. At the same time, Dr. Peterson's detractors (despite their attempts to prevent this film from being screened) will find little to complain about in how the filmmakers presented their side of the issue. Ultimately, I didn't enjoy the film quite as much as I've enjoyed many of Dr. Peterson's lectures but it's nevertheless an excellent and well-made film and it's very much worth buying a copy and investing an hour and a half of your time to watch it. The movie also gives you an inside look into his personal life which helps give you a better understanding of him. I do wish the movie discussed more of his psychological stances since if you don't know his background then you are left wondering why so many people in the movie tell him he changed their life for the better.
